I'm so excited to tell you that I have started writing #thebrandstylistbook2. The past six weeks have been devoted to writing and I can't tell you how thrilled I am with how the book is taking shape. It's a funny thing though, writing. I've written before about how the words flowed so easily with How to Style Your Brand. And when I look back at what we've created, a book with cohesion, polish and focus, a book that's been so overwhelmingly received by you guys and one that I'm immensely proud of, it's easy to forget that the words didn't tumble out of my head quite so fully formed.
I wrote plenty of drivel that we needed to cut. I repeated myself. I skipped over things. I sometimes didn't know exactly what I wanted to say but I wrote anyway because I needed to keep writing. I needed to create something before I could pull it into shape.
It's easy to forget that. My neatly edited book with it's beautiful images and clear structure wasn't always that way. It took time, energy and expertise from a great number of people.
In writing book two I've faced the same challenges. I still don't know exactly where the book is headed or precisely what structure it'll take because I haven't finished writing yet. I know vaguely what I want the book to do and I have fleeting moments of clarity when I see precisely how you'll benefit from it and why you need it, but those ideas aren't fully formed yet. They will be, but only once I've written and edited everything myself. Then I'll put the book through two editors before I even think about working on the design. It's a slow process but we will get there.
The book is currently at around 12,500 words and I imagine the first draft will sit at around 36,000-40,000 before we edit it back down to (excluding captions) I would guess around 30,000 like How to Style Your Brand. Part of this process is about clarity and inspiration, but much of it at this stage is simply about putting the hours in to get the words down. Time has been pretty short of late, and realistically that's not going to change any time soon, but I may, just may, be close to having a finished first draft by the time we head to New York at the end of March. Cross your fingers for me!
Here's a little visual diary of my writing so far - you'll find more on my Instagram. I'll keep you posted!
Writing. It's a funny business. You have to be in the right mood for it. I was hoping to have the first draft of #thebrandstylistbook2 written by the end of next week. As it is, I'll probably be halfway through. And I think that's ok... You have to be inspired when you write or what's the point? When I'm inspired the words flow, ideas leap from my mind onto the page and everything just seems easy. Sitting down and making yourself write for the sake of getting 1000 words out is, in my limited experience, futile. Here's to an inspired week next week. Have a great weekend! #flow #writing #amwritimg #authorlife
LOVE this quote from Carrie Green beautifully lettered by @anelisesalvo via Pinterest. Printed off and taped up in my studio space. Just about sums up how I'm feeling today. Brave things are being done. Big things are happening. Excited! #goalgetter #kickass #flow #icanandiwill #icanandiwillwatchme
