"Brilliant. Well organised and so informative." Notes from The Branding for Florists Workshop, March 2015
Waaay back in March my good friend Rona Wheeldon and I ran our very first Branding for Florists workshop at our favourite venue, Brixton East in London. Since then life has been quite a whirlwind and here we are in July already, but the photos by the talented Katie Spicer are just too good not to share. So here's an insight into a truly fabulous day with some very lovely florists.
Rona and I had been talking about expanding our portfolio of Flowerona for Florists workshops for some time and branding was a topic that was requested a lot from our delegates. So hot on the heels of the Flowerona rebrand and my new book, we felt that the time was right to launch a branding workshop. Our goal was very simple: to de-mystify the branding process so that whether they planned on creating something from scratch or would work with a designer, they could work through the process with confidence and flair.
"Amazing. A packed day of information, top tips and action plans." Nicola Eve
"Informative. Pertinent. Great atmosphere. I'm inspired." Nicola Robertson
"Inspiring, exciting, well thought out and well delivered. Excellent starting point for a rebrand/ new site etc." Rachel, The Rose Shed
"Inspiring and empowering! The presenters, venue, content and food have motivated me to achieve with the branding of my business. Thank you!!!" Billy Esler
We had a real mix of students: from some startups on a strictly limited budget looking for inspiration and guidance on how to create something professional with a minimal budget; to those with upwards of £20k to spend on the right website who needed to be certain that their investment would pay off.
It was such a fun day and we had the best feedback we've ever had on one of our courses. I think this was down to the fact that we really got the students working hard and making lots of decisions on the day. It's certainly something we'll be keeping in mind for future workshops and plan on tweaking the structure of both the Social for Florists and my Colour for Creatives workshop to make sure that students get the very best experience possible.
We kicked off the day with coffee and mingling and the buzz in the air was palpable. I always enjoy meeting everyone at the start of the day and it was great to see so much networking and sharing of stories going on. After introductions, it was time to get realistic about what it takes, and costs to create a website that wins you business. Most small business owners focus, rightly so, on creating a website and I wanted to break down the processes involved - planning, copywriting, brand identity, SEO etc so that we could start to explore which they should DIY and what they should expect to pay.
So many of the business owners I speak to spread their budget too thinly, and end up compromising on quality as a result. I wanted to get people to understand what things should cost so that they could make informed decisions about where to put their investment. We went into coffee sobered and with some of the students quite shocked! But it was all good and I promise you that by the end of the day every single student was excited and confident for the future!
Elevenses were incredible as always.
Rona shared the process behind the Flowerona rebrand along with her tips on what she'd learned and what she would do differently next time before we moved on to mood boarding the new brand identities. This was a very collaborative process between us and the students and we really had a lot of fun.
After a delicious lunch we moved on to websites. Focusing on structuring the site to get the very best result as well as looking at best practice from some of the florists that we consider to have the best websites in the business. Armed with an action plan we moved downstairs for some well-deserved cocktails and chance to mull over the day and hatch plans for the future.
I loved teaching that day so much, and for me, it was especially life affirming to know that much of the advice, tips and process I covered in my (then) forthcoming book was very much needed.
Fancy joining us next time?
Our next Flowerona workshop will be Social Media for Florists on Tuesday 20th October. We will hold another Branding for Florists workshop in 2016 so do join Rona's mailing list if you'd like to be kept up to date. You can see Rona's writeup of the day here.
My next workshop will be at Brixton East on Thursday 12th November and is the hugely popular Colour Psychology for Creatives. The last two workshops have sold out so do book your place sooner rather than later if you fancy joining us. Full details of a day of fun, creativity and learning right here.
